Everything I watched in January 2022

What a month! Another lockdown + a lack of school pressure = a LOT of TV.

Best Bets

The Worst Person in the World

You know when you read a really good book and you just know it’s good. That is how I felt about this movie. I’ll put it this way, I watch a lot contemporary romance – but this felt different. It felt less like a guilty pleasure and more like a privilege to experience. From beginning to end, it was just such a well crafted movie. The acting, production design, writing, cinematography… just all exquisite.

My team at work has been obsessed with this movie since it hit Disney+ and… I get it. It’s just a fun, well-crafted Disney animated film. The music is great, the animation is fun, and it’s a short 90 minutes. It’s a guaranteed hit.

Real Housewives of Salt Lake City S2

THIS SHOW just keeps getting better and better and more deranged and chaotic… I am * obsessed * with it. It is whiplashing drama and I cannot get enough. I cannot wait to see how this show wraps up the season and I am already excited for future seasons.

Joe Millionaire: For Richer or Pooer

Move over Bachelor… hello Joe Millionaire. It’s 2003 all over again in the best way possible. This refreshed IP has been taken over by SallyAnn Salsano (the creator of Jersey Shore) and it is fantastic. It’s a dating competition show in a fresh and exciting way. I am obsessed and I want multiple seasons.

If I have learned anything this month, it’s that I really enjoy Kenneth Branagh as a director. This semi-biographical coming-of-age film set in the 1960s in (obviously) Belfast is a film. It doesn’t feel like a movie, it feels like something film schools will be studying for years to come. It’s an actor’s film. It’s just beautiful. If you are a film nerd – this is a must-watch.

Still Standing S7

Of course, I was going to watch this šŸ™‚ I pitched a few of the towns featured this season back in 2019 when I worked on S6. I adore this show and I know how tough it was to make. So kudos to the team.

Run the Burbs

This was my surprise hit. I loved this show. I laughed out loud multiple times during the pilot. It’s fresh, it’s cute, it’s a perfect CBC show for 2022. It was my ‘win’ of the new Canadian shows this year.

A classic “put it on in the background” and enjoy. It’s an easy watch when I need something to enjoy. I really like this show. It hasn’t fully captured my heart, but I’m quite into it. Great cast, great ideas

Okay but not great

Son of a Critch

I wanted to love this show, and I really liked it… but it’s not as good as I wanted it to be. I think I was hoping it would be sharper – more Canadian Derry Girls. It’s still very good, it’s just not fantastic you know?

This Is Us – S6

Okay so I’ve been with this show since the beginning and like Son of a Critch, I really want to love this show. I want it to be fantastic (because it was fantastic in season 1/2). It just is moving a bit slow for me. It feels overly melodramatic but I’m also hooked and I need to know what happens. Overall give me more Jack and more teenage big-three timeline.

Too Hot To HandleS3

So… what a trashy show. I cannot not watch it, but it’s not good. It’s just pure guilty pleasure, reality trash. Ugh. Addictive.

Every Marvel Movie

See this blog to catch up on what I’ve watched šŸ™‚

RuPaul’s Drag Race

I’m not thrilled with this season. I’m watching it, but I’m not really into it. I’ve been disappointed in the way the format has been working: eliminating folks only to bring them back and then eliminating other people for real instead… it just feels quite manipulative and unfair. Plus – some of the eliminations… why? I find myself just yelling at the tv most of the time…

Queer Eye S6

It’s always fun to curl up with the fab five… but, it’s getting tired. Will I still watch it every season… yes.

Real Housewives of NYC – S6

“The only thing that’s fake about me, IS THIS LEG!” … I am still in shock. WHAT A SEASON. I honestly cannot stand Ramona and Sonja is a wildcard (not in a good way) but I do like Heather and Carol right now. This show is car crash. I don’t want to look but I can’t help it…

Cheer S2

I tried. I really did. I watched the first few episodes and was optimistic they could get it together after an incredible first season. It wasn’t great. There were so many reasons the show fell apart but I think we lost the “average kids” showing their incredible athleticism and their personal challenges. The kids were not average anymore – overnight they became mega-famous and we really didn’t get enough of the sport. It was hard to watch the breakout star fall so sharply and it was a real challenge to see Monica’s reactions. It was ugly. If they do a third season, ditch Navarro completely and focus on a new school.

Hype House

Insert Eye Roll – this show could have been something, but it was embarrassing. Here’s my hot take: The Hype House as a TikTok collective was built on the backs of Addison Rae and Charli D’Amelio, but without these two girls the show (like the house) has no relevance. The internet moves SO fast, what is trendy one minute, is lame the next and unfortunately while this house was cool… it’s “cringe” now and that cringe reflects on the show. Moving along.

House of Gucci

I wanted to love this movie. It was just way too long. Sigh – just watch the trailer. That’s really all you need. Father, son, and House of Gucci.
